Structural repairs and external refurbishment of a 22-storey tower block
Contract Sum: £1,300,000
Contract Duration: 52 weeks
Client: City of Salford
Structural Engineers: Shepherd Gilmour
Thorn Court was fully tenanted for the duration of this project and the key to our success was effective communication with the residents. We worked closely with the residents’ committee and held regular open forums to allow residents to air their views. The majority of the work was carried out by our own direct labour force and the residents appreciated seeing the same familiar faces throughout the project. Mast climbers were used to avoid enclosing the building in scaffolding.
The concrete beams between each floor were failing and our works centred on the installation of a stainless steel brickwork support angle system around the perimeter of the building at each floor level. Other works included the replacement of over 600 windows, repairs to the concrete frame, brickwork repairs, wall-tie replacement and asbestos removal.
“We found that Manchester and Cheshire Construction had a positive approach to all aspects of the contract. The Director and site staff were always willing to put forward proposals to help overcome problems which arose during the contract period. Their willingness to quickly resolve any contentious issues was refreshing and we certainly have and will propose them for future works.“
